How Will You Prepare For Corrective Eye Surgery?

There are numerous conditions that affect the vision that can now be corrected through simple surgical procedures. These surgical procedures usually involve using lasers and other high-tech tools and processes to make the surgery as simplified as possible. However, every surgery will involve some prior preparation. Take a look at some of what will happen before your corrective eye surgery so you will be well prepared and your surgery will have the highest chance of being successful.

Your doctor may ask that you don't wear contacts for several days before the surgery.

Contact lenses can actually mold the shape of the eye into an unnatural form. Therefore, before the surgery, your eye doctor will likely ask that you swap out contact lenses for glasses so the eye can retain its normal shape for both testing and the surgery. It is important that the doctor is able to get exact measurements of the surface of the eye before your surgery so they can properly maneuver the laser to the correct areas that will be surgically repaired.

You will be given a glaucoma test and thorough examination of your retina.

If there are retinal issues present or there are signs of developing glaucoma, the corrective eye surgery may not work as it would on a normal eye. Therefore, before your corrective surgery, the doctor will do a very thorough examination of your retina. They will also be doing pressure tests to ensure there is no excess pressure on the retinal nerve that could be relative to developing glaucoma. In addition to these tests and exams, precise measurements will be taken of the eye's surface and the thickness of the cornea will also be measured.

Your doctor will go over what to expect after surgery.

Having a full understanding of your surgery and what you should do and expect afterward will help you have the best chance of recovering fully and healing properly. During your pre-op exams, the doctor will go over exactly what it is they will be doing during the surgery, as well as what you should expect when everything is over and signs that something is wrong once you get back home.

Regardless of what type of corrective eye surgery you will be getting, there will be certain stages of preparation before the surgery. Be sure to talk openly with your doctor to understand what you should expect before your corrective eye surgery.
