Easy Ways to Treat an Itchy Scalp at Home With Items You Already Have in Your Pantry

If you have an itchy scalp, you may make some minor adjustments, such as changing shampoo, to see if the problem will resolve on its own. If it will not, you may be looking for a way to treat the problem. An itchy scalp can be uncomfortable and can cause flakes on your head, which can be noticeable. Here are two ways you can treat an itchy scalp, on your own, with items you likely already have in your home.

Baking Soda

Baking soda can neutralize the pH balance of your skin. This can cure an itch that is caused by your head producing too much oil or being too dry. This method also helps to control dandruff. Baking soda is extremely easy to use and is cheap. Mix one part baking soda with three parts water to form a thin paste. While in the shower, pour the mixture over your damp head and begin to massage it into the scalp. Pour enough of the mixture on your head so that it covers your entire scalp. If desired, the mixture can also be massaged into your hair to wash it at the same time. Allow the mixture to sit for three minutes on your head before rinsing it away with warm water. This process can be repeated each time your hair needs to be washed.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar can help to cure your itchy scalp in a number of ways. The liquid has disinfectant and anti-fungal properties that can kill a variety of fungus's, yeast's and viruses that cause an itchy scalp. It also helps to balance the pH level on your head, helping to prevent oily or dry scalp. And it has also been shown to help with psoriasis, which can make your scalp itch. To use this method, mix equal parts water and apple cider vinegar in a spray bottle. Rinse your hair to remove any build up on the scalp and towel dry your head. Spray your scalp with this mixture. If you are sensitive to the apple cider vinegar and it burns, dilute it with more water. Massage the mixture into your scalp and then cover your head with a shower cap. Allow it to sit on your scalp for 15 to 20 minutes before washing it out. Repeat this process twice a week for best results.

While these remedies can clear up some of the causes of an itchy scalp, they cannot solve every problem. If you have found no relief with these at home remedies, you will want to make an appointment with a dermatologist. A dermatologist treats skin conditions. They can look at your scalp and determine what the problem is and then give you the appropriate medication to treat the problem and resolve your itchy scalp.
