Laser Hair Removal Or Electrolysis: Which Is Better For Removing Unwanted Hair?

If you want to get rid of unwanted hair and do away with shaving or waxing for good, you have two major hair removal options: laser hair removal and electrolysis. Both are generally safe and effective, but which is a better choice for you? Take a look at the benefits of both treatments and use this information to decide.

In what ways is electrolysis better?

It's truly permanent.

Laser hair removal is long-lasting, but it's not truly permanent. The hairs that are killed will eventually grow back. Whether that's a year or ten years from now will depend on the type of laser used and your body's unique qualities. You will need periodic touch-ups to remain hairless. Electrolysis, however, is truly permanent. Once a specific hair follicle is killed with electrolysis, it is never going to grow back. You may need several sessions to ensure each follicle is treated, but once all of them have been treated, you'll be done.

It can treat any color hair.

The lasers used in laser hair removal target the pigment in hair. So, they're best for treating darker hairs against lighter skin. If you have dark skin or light hair, laser hair removal won't work very well. Electrolysis, however, works on any color skin and hair.

In what ways is laser hair removal better?

It's a lot faster.

In electrolysis, one hair is treated at a time. Your practitioner places a tiny needle into the hair follicle and then sends electricity down the needles to kill that single follicle. This process is repeated for each hair, so you'll be in the treatment chair for quite a while. Laser hair removal uses a device that targets a whole patch of hairs at once. So, your appointment will go a lot faster. If you're having a larger area of the body treated, like your back or legs, laser hair removal may be a better choice for this reason.

It may be easier to find.

Administering electrolysis takes a great deal of expertise because each needle must be placed with precision. Laser hair removal is not as precise, so more aestheticians and dermatologists tend to offer the service. If you're in a big city, you may not have trouble finding either treatment, but, in more rural areas, you may have easier access to laser hair removal than to electrolysis.
