Caring For An Aging Loved One

When a loved one ages and starts to have a more difficult time making their way around the house, you want to be sure you start introducing changes to the house that continue to make it a safer home for them. This article will serve as a helpful guide to getting your home set up for your loved on so you won't have to worry about them being injured while caring for their everyday needs.

Add hand rails to certain areas around the home

You should think about having hand rails installed around your home to help your loved one to keep their balance in areas where there is a higher risk of them tripping or falling. Some of the areas where hand rails can be very helpful include next to chairs so they can have help getting up from them, next to the toilet, in the bath tub or anywhere that you notice they have a bit of trouble navigating their way around.

Get them a hospital bed

When someone starts to have a hard time getting around as good as they used to, it can be especially difficult for them to move around first thing in the morning. This can make them unstable as they are trying to sit up and get themselves out of bed. Hospital beds have heads that can be moved up into the sitting position. This will allow them to sit up without straining themselves. From there, they can slowly work their way out of the bed as they feel more balanced.

Hire home health care services

You can hire a home health care service to come to the house and help your loved one with chores they now have a hard time doing on their own. When you hire this service, they will come up with a care plan that will include the services your loved one is in need of. Some examples of the types of things they can help with include shopping, cleaning, cooking, grooming and rides to the doctors.

Put in a stair lift

If you live in a house that has a second story, you can have a stair lift installed. The stair lift will take them from one floor to the other safely so you don't have to worry about them having an accident trying to get up and down the stairs. You can contact a stair lift company, like All-Star Lifts or another location, to find out more about installation and benefits.

Now that you have a better idea of some of the changes you can make, it will be easier for you to create a safer home for them.
