Weird Phobias And How You Can Overcome Them

There are many different types of phobias, such as agoraphobia (scared of spiders), social phobia, and more. There are also some very strange phobias you may be suffering from. Below are some of these phobias, as well as how you can overcome them.

Arithmophobia

Arithmophobia is a fear of numbers. This could be numbers in a checkbook, numbers on a lottery ticket, or numbers someone sees driving down the road, such as gas prices at a station. They may be scared to check their bank statement, or dial a number on a telephone. Some people fear the numbers 666 and 8, which are sometimes associated with evil spirits or bad luck.

Fear of Knees

The fear of knees is known as genuphobia, and even though it may sound strange, it is a real fear for some people. This could be fear of seeing their own knees, or the fear of seeing someone else's knees. This can be especially difficult if they have children, because they would see their knees all the time.

Writing in Public

Writing in public is known as scriptophobia, and this could be anything someone writes on, such as writing their signature for someone, or filling out papers in a doctor's office. When writing, a person may feel dread, anxiety, sweating, dry mouth, and more.

Laughing

Fear of laughing (geliophobia) is another fear some people may have. This could be laughing themselves, hearing someone laugh in a movie, or hearing someone laugh in public. Many times, they may feel the person is laughing at them.

Relatives

A person may have a fear of their relatives, which is known as syngensphobia. They may feel irritated or embarrassed while around them. In most cases, this fear is not from a particular member of their family but all of them.

Getting Help

No matter how strange your fear is, you should get help from a medical professional. Some of these fears are almost impossible to stay away from, and you may end up being scared to leave your house. Behavioral therapy can be used to alleviate the phobia. The doctor will first give you a complete psychiatric and medical examination to make sure your symptoms are not due to another condition you may have. Behavioral therapy can teach you techniques you can use to alleviate your fears. One type of technique is deep breathing, known as diaphragmatic breathing, or the doctor may use exposure therapy. This type of therapy exposes you to the object or situation that frightens you a little at a time so you can develop the skills to cope with it.
