Help Prevent Heart Disease With These 4 Natural Remedies

There is no way to completely prevent heart disease, but these remedies will increase your defenses against it. Add things like flaxseed,  vitamin D, and more to keep your heart healthy.  Consult your vascular surgeon about these natural remedies, as well as other approaches that might work best for your heart health.

Flaxseed

Studies have shown that flaxseed lowers blood cholesterol levels. It has also been used to treat other heart disorders, such as high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, and more.

Some ways to add flaxseed to your diet include:

  • Sprinkle it in your salads, sandwiches, soups, ice cream, oatmeal, cottage cheese, etc.
  • Add flaxseed when making breads, pancakes, muffins, etc. When you mix your ingredients, add one tablespoon for every cup of flour.
  • Purchase flaxseed oil, and put a teaspoon in foods as you are cooking.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Studies have shown that eating fish at least two times per week boosts the level of omega-3 fatty acids in your body. Some fish you should eat include:

  • Lake trout
  • Mackerel
  • Sardines
  • Salmon
  • Albacore tuna

Vitamin D

According to the Cleveland Clinic, vitamin D can help with heart disease. You can get more vitamin D in your diet by taking supplements. Talk with your surgeon on the dosage you should take per day. This typically depends on your weight and age. This is important, as too much vitamin D in your body can raise your levels of calcium, which can lead to kidney damage or kidney stones.

Hawthorn

Hawthorn supplements can improve the amount of blood that is pumped from your heart while it is contracting, as well as lower your blood cholesterol, and relax blood vessels further from your heart. Again, before you start taking hawthorn supplements, talk with your vascular surgeon, who can tell you the right dosage, and when you should take it.

According to the Mayo Clinic, resveratrol raises your HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, which is the good cholesterol. It also reduces blood clots from forming and increases the levels of LDL (low-density lipoprotein), which is the bad cholesterol.

You can find resveratrol in the skin of grapes. Besides eating grapes, you can find this skin in red wine, or drinking grape juice.  You will also find it in cranberries, blueberries, and peanuts.

These natural treatments are not a cure for heart disease, and are not a substitute for your preventative care from your vascular surgeon at a clinic like Cedar Surgical Associates PC.
