5 Ways To Improve Your Eye Health

Your eyes are one of the most important parts of your body, but unfortunately they are often neglected. Your daily habits, what you eat, and how often you go to the doctor can all make a difference in your overall eye health. Here are some simple ways to improve your eye health and reduce the risk for various eye-related conditions and illnesses.

Eat Healthy Foods

Believe it or not, the food you put into your body can make a big difference in your eye health. Eye health, like many other aspects of your physical health, relies on proper nutrients. The best way to get your vitamins and minerals is with the foods you eat. The best nutrients for eye health are vitamin C, vitamin E, omega-3, zinc, and lutein.  To get these nutrients, eat plenty of green vegetables—including collard greens, spinach, and kale—eggs, nuts, beans, tuna and salmon, citrus fruit, and whole grains.

Protect Your Eyes

Eye health also depends on how well you take care of your yes, starting with protection. Any time you are outside during the day, you should be wearing sunglasses, with the exception of rainy weather. Even when it isn't a bright, sunny day, the UV rays can still affect your eyes. Some people have sensitive retinas that are prone to sunburn, but they don't realize it until they go to their eye doctor and discover the damage they have done. You will have healthier eyes for a longer period of time simply by wearing sunglasses. Don't just choose sunglasses based on their appearance, but choose ones with a high amount of UV protection.

Stop Smoking

Smoking tobacco cigarettes is bad for your overall health, but also your eye health. It can lead to conditions like macular degeneration, cataracts, and optic nerve damage. Even if you fail the first few times after quitting, it is worth it to keep trying. Talk to your doctor about ways to help you quit smoking if you are struggling with it. Your eyes and the rest of your body will thank you.

Don't Stare at a Computer Screen

If you work on a computer all day, it is important that you give your eyes a break. Make it a point to not stare at the computer screen for too long, and to look away for a few seconds routinely throughout the day. This will help you prevent dry eyes, straining of the eyes, and vision that becomes blurry. It can also help with headaches, shoulder, neck and back pain when you aren't staring too long at the computer.

Visit an Eye Doctor

Seeing your optometrist every year is important, even if you don't have vision problems. Too many people only see their eye doctor when they need glasses or contacts, but you also need a regular exam to check your eye health. Schedule an appointment with an eye doctor, such as Richards Charles A OD, at least once a year.
